What I love about this house….lots! We designed it to retire in, but life had different ideas. So, there are a lot of perks to make it easier to be self-sustainable and comfortable. One of the best perks is year-round fresh water in the creek for livestock. Fresh water-a great perk for us since it’s less work to provide livestock with good water. The spring that feeds the creek (the north branch of the Wiscoy) is half a mile upstream and pumps out 3,300 gal/min. As a teenager, I worked at the trout hatchery where this spring is located, what a fun job! And there is history related to the spring and other springs in the area. There was a dam and grist mill on the creek in the early 1800’s which created a lake (Barny’s lake) so this used to be “lake-front property ????. The dam was located where the bridge on the property is now. The dam failed in 1864 and was never rebuilt, so the title to the property begins then, cool right? The pond on the back of the property is also a very large spring and had a part in filling the lake. The ground around the house and barn is all bank-run gravel since it was on the side of the lake.
We purchased the home in 2001 and built on a 2-story addition that tripled the size of the home and completely remolded and updated the original home. The result is a beautiful homestead ready to take care of whoever owns it.
So, what else do I love about this home?
? Large wrap around deck. The view never disappoints. In the spring you will see all different types of birds/waterfowl migrating through and some that stay. In the summer the hill is SO green it looks fake, and even in the winter there is always something going on especially since the creek doesn’t freeze.
? Raising livestock. We had Dexter cattle- the calves every year were so much fun. My mom and I had horses so we could ride together. And our geese actually became “famous” because there was so many of them (they are very prolific) they had the nickname “the Rt 362 mafia”. They protected our chickens and ducks. Check out the Facebook page to see them ????.
? The peace of living away from everything. I’ve worked at SUNY Brockport for 20+ years. Long drive, but I’ve listened to audiobooks about everything you can imagine and then I go back to my peaceful home.
? Fresh produce. The gardens provide plenty, enough to put lots in the freezer – asparagus, zucchini, corn, beans, tomatoes, peppers, peas, pickles and so much more……, and others outside the garden; blueberries, currants, apples, leeks, blackberries, raspberries.
? The kitchen. I love to cook. Lots of cabinets, counters, and a large island with a very handy electrical outlet on the side. A triple sink provides a drying sink so the other sinks are clear.
? Walk-in pantry off kitchen - 2nd refrigerator, storage and counterspace.
? Three ways to heat – propane, coal or wood. The propane or coal burners provide an awesome heated floor. Or, if you prefer burning wood, that is readily available here, the wood stove provides a nice blanket of warmth. You can also run the propane boiler with the wood stove, or the coal boiler with the wood stove, then you have both radiant floor heat and forced air heat, very nice!
? The creek. It runs about 45 degrees all year round. It doesn’t freeze so the livestock and birds have open water year-round. It’s also great to cool off when you are gardening on a hot day.
? Walking on the back property. Fresh leeks in the spring, try making leek soup ????, trail riding, mushroom collecting (chicken of the woods), or hunting (my dad hunted turkey and deer until he passed).
? The large fenced in yard. Keeps the dogs safe and others out.
? Other loves; separate washer & dryer in basement for dog blankets or dirty clothing; half bath in the basement-no need to go into the house if you are working outside; beautiful barn with four box stalls and more; automatic whole house & barn back-up generator; breakfast/lunch bar in the kitchen; the greenhouses – grow your own; attached garage-so I didn’t have to go out in the weather before work .... we have been “fine-tuning” this home for years. It’s impossible to list all that I love!
